morning routine
Our daily routine is an essential part of our long term health. Ayurveda teaches us that it is when we become out of balance with nature and disconnected from our Selves that dis-ease occurs. Natures most potent medicine comes in the form of Maitri - or self-love. And it is tending to ourselves in the smallest and simplest ways that we grow a connection to ourselves that serves us in the long run. A connection to self allows us to experience when the body, mind or spirit are starting to get off track and these daily practices bring us back to ourselves one little and generous step at a time.
RISE WITH THE SUN
The vedic text encourages us to rise before or with the sun in order to experience the the most potent time of day for spiritual activation with the pure air. The stillness of early mornings allows us to start our day with reverence and energetic connection, a time for sacred ritual and communion.
INVOKE GRATITUDE
Before rising, give gratitude for at least three things. Gratitude invokes gratitude and when we begin our day focused on the frequency of gratitude, we invite blessings and healing powers. A prayer to Dhanvantri or your Supreme Being of choice is a call to powerful influence.
ANSWER NATURES CALL
Daily poops are important. Holding on to the body’s waste make the body dull and sluggish. Pooping early in the day rids the body of toxins and prepares for healthy digestion, movement and keeps the skin glowing and healthy.
TEND TO THE SENSES
Scrape the tongue, cleanse the eyes and nose, and then oil the body, mouth, nose and ears. Cleansing and then nourishing the body with oil, as a ritual in tending to the senses, tunes us in to the 5 senses and sets the tone for staying in alignment throughout the day. Ayurveda reminds us that it is misuse of the senses that causes dis-ease.
CEREMONIOUS FIRST SIP
Sip warm water or a digestive tonic to activate the metabolism and kindle agni.
TUNE IN
Chanting mantra, pranayama, meditation, prayer, asana, mudra and any other form of reverence or stillness and tuning in can harness gifts of spirituality, connectedness, resiliency, youthfulness, longevity and calm.
MOVEMENT
Yoga, qi gong, walking, pilates, resistance training, martial arts or some other form of movement is crucial for long term health and for moving pranic energy, nourishing, revitalizing and energizing the tissues and cells of the body.
NOURISH THY SELF
Eat a warm, well-cooked & well-spiced breakfast that is made with love and intention. Eat with care and presence, giving thanks and tending to the digestion. This meal sets the stage for digestion all day long.
