Every autumn I get asked some version of the same question. Not what a cleanse is, or what it costs — something quieter and much more personal. Is this for me, right now? And the question deserves a real answer because Ayurvedic Cleanse is about more than the physical impact on the body and invites us to go deeper.
A cleanse is not a thing you should do because it is Autumn and everyone else is. It is a thing you do because your body has been telling you something, and you have finally decided to listen.
So here is how I help people decide — the signs I look for, and the signs that tell me to say not this season.
What a cleanse is actually for
In Ayurveda, most of what goes wrong begins in the same place: digestion. Not just the digestion of food, but the digestion of everything — experience, emotion, season, sensation. When that capacity is strong, the body takes what it needs and lets the rest go. When it is weak, residue accumulates. Ayurveda calls that residue ama.
An Ayurvedic cleanse is not about deprivation, and it is not about punishment for how you ate this summer. It is about restoring the fire — agni — that does the sorting, and then giving the body a quiet enough window to clear what it has been holding.
Signs the body may be asking
We don't answer the "to cleanse or not to cleanse" question based on diagnosis. These are the traditional indicators I was taught to notice, and the ones people describe to me most often when they are ready.
A coating on the tongue most mornings
This is the one I trust most, because it is the one you can see. Look before you brush, before coffee or breakfast, before anything. A thin clear film is ordinary. A coating that is thick, white, sticky, or that reappears within hours of scraping, is traditionally read as a sign of accumulation.
If you want to learn to read your own, I wrote a whole piece on it: what your tongue is telling you.
Heaviness that outlasts the meal
Food should leave you steady, not weighted or gassy or bloated. If you finish an ordinary meal and wish you could just lie down, that is worth noticing. It is a message from the body that agni isn't working as intended.
A fog you have started calling normal
Having trouble remembering things or staying focused? Or worse yet, having trouble feeling motivated? Does it feel like you're underwater? People often mention this one last, or only when asked, because they have lived with it long enough to think it is simply who they are now. Maybe they think this is what is expected during this phase of life. A gentle reminder that what is common isn't necessarily normal.
Sleep that does not restore
Do you feel dull when you wake up in the morning? Do you require a slow start or feel like you need something to jump-start your day? Do you feel like you move throughout your day slightly detached from things? No matter how long you sleep, it never feels quite like enough?
An appetite that has lost its shape
Either never truly hungry, or hungry constantly and never satisfied. Or, sometimes you're ravenous and sometimes it's hours between meals without you noticing? All of these point the same direction — a fire that has stopped burning cleanly.
If you recognise several of these, it does not mean something is wrong with you. It means the season has arrived at a useful moment. And if you recognise none of them, that is genuinely good news — carry on with your daily rhythm and enjoy the autumn.
What level cleanse is right
Our seasonal cleanses have varying levels and not everyone's cleanse looks the same. And that is one thing about a small and intimate community cleanse of this nature — you can go at your pace in your way while still learning about the other options and benefitting from other people's experience. I'm pleased to welcome past "hard core" cleansers who are stepping lightly this fall and other people who are feeling ready to step things up a bit. Your cleanse can be as unique as you are and we tend to each experience throughout our time together.
When to wait
This is the part that gets left out of most writing about cleansing, and the part I refuse to ignore.
A cleanse asks something of the body. It is a reduction — of food, of stimulation, of pace — and a body that is already depleted does not have the reserves to spend. In Ayurveda, cleansing a depleted person does not clear them out. It empties them further.
So I ask people to wait if they are:
- Pregnant or breastfeeding
- Recovering from illness, surgery, or injury
- Managing a health condition
- In the middle of grief, upheaval, or a period of real exhaustion
- Underweight, or with a history of disordered eating
- Facing ten days that are already full — travel, a deadline, a house full of guests
That last one is not a medical reason, but I include it deliberately because a cleanse undertaken in a week you cannot protect will not go the way you hoped, and the disappointment tends to linger longer than the benefit would have.
Waiting is not failing. There is another spring, another winter and another autumn.
And if you feel somewhat depleted but somehow still drawn to this experience, that's because you might be craving a reset. And from that point we recognize and stick with that mantra throughout your community cleanse experience. Because once again, this is your cleanse and we want to make sure it works for YOU.
The question underneath the question
When people ask whether they are ready, they usually mean am I disciplined enough? That is almost never the real issue.
The real question is one of capacity — how much can your body and your life actually give to this right now? And the honest answer varies enormously between people, and between years for the same person.
This is why I do not run one cleanse at one intensity. A gentle cleanse you complete does more good than a deep one you abandon on day three, and it does far more good than one you were talked into. Choosing well is not a lesser version of the practice. It is the practice.
If the answer is yes
There are two ways in, and they are genuinely different things.
The Autumn Community Detox is ten days at home, in your own kitchen, guided daily and alongside a group but you choose the depth. We meet on Zoom every day, recipes and practice instructions are provided. This year's community cleanse runs November 5–14.
Panchakarma is the deep water — Ayurveda's most thorough cleanse, a residential experience here in Boulder, one-to-one, with 2+ daily body therapies and meals prepared for your constitution. It is a different order of undertaking and one I wish everyone could experience at some point in their health journey.
If you are unsure which is yours, or whether either is, write to me and tell me where you are. That conversation costs nothing and I welcome the chance to connect over what experience will serve you best in this time and stage.
This writing is educational and reflects traditional Ayurvedic practice. It is not a diagnosis, and it is not a substitute for care from your physician. The signs described here are traditional indicators, not medical tests. If you are pregnant, nursing, managing a health condition, or taking medication, please speak with your doctor before beginning a cleanse or any new practice.
Om Shanti,
